Sophie's Run

Staff and students! Please join our English Landing Team at Sophie’s Run 5k on Saturday, May 7th at 9am. We would LOVE to have a good representation of EAGLES at the event. You can register at http://www.runsophies5k.com/ and be sure to join our team by using the drop down box under TEAM NAME and selecting English Landing. Sophie’s Run benefits the Sophie's Run Foundation which has been hosting this event since 2012. All proceeds from this race go to the Park Hill school district!  The foundation began with a $5,000 contribution to the assistive technology library and now awards devices and equipment directly to families in the Park Hill school district.  To this date, they have awarded 26 communication devices to students!  This is amazing and is changing the lives of students in our school district. We hope to see you at Sophie’s Run!

Curriculum March 28 - April 8

Reading - We started a new unit this week on interpreting text; Unit 6:  Interpretation of Text.  We took specific scenes from books we've previously read and interpreted their meaning.  Next week we're comparing character perspectives to the meaning of the story.  We're also developing a reading plan to deepen interpretations and revisiting interpretations to build supporting evidence.

Priority Standards for Unit 6 Interpretation of Text:

  • Determine the theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text
  • Compare and contrast the point of view from which different stories are narrated, including the difference between first- and third- person narrations.
  • Compare and contrast the treatment of similar themes and topics (e.g. opposition of good and evil and patterns of events (e.g. the quest)) in stories, myths, and traditional literature from different cultures. 


Writing - We also began a new writing unit this week; Poetry Anthologies - Writing, Thinking, and Seeing More.  During the first part of this unit, students will be making a poetry anthology on the topic of school.  This week we studied how line breaks are used.

Priority Standards for Unit 5- Poetry:

  • Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.


Math - We are continuing on in Topic 13 this week.  Students have been busy changing a fraction with a denominator of 10 or 100 into an equivalent decimal.  Students have also studied decimal place value including the word form and expanded form of decimals.  Next week, we'll finish up the unit by comparing and ordering decimals and using money to understand decimals.  Students will take their topic 13 test next week.

Science - Fourth graders have been very busy working on their display boards for the science fair this week.

Social Studies- Next week, we'll begin our unit on government as we prepare to go on our Jefferson City trip!  In 4th grade we focus on Missouri's 3 branches of government.  Students also learn about the purpose of the Missouri Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Reporting Topics:
Civil and Criminal Legal Systems

  • The student will describe how authoritative decisions are made, enforced and interpreted within the state government.
  • The student will evaluate constructive processes or methods for resolving conflicts by using a problem-solving organizer.
Government Systems

  • The student will describe rights included in the Bill of Rights, including freedoms of religion, speech, press; to assemble peacefully; to petition the government; and to be treated fairly by the government.
  • The student will explain the major purpose of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
  • The student will explain why Missouri has a constitution and why the state makes and enforces laws.
  • The student will compare the functions of the three branches of government in the state government.

Curriculum February 29th - March 4th

Reading - We are wrapping up our unit on poetry. This week the students focused on Greek Myths and the elements of poetry. Students worked on summarizing texts and finding the theme in both myths and poems as well as determining the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text. Next, students will be working on the elements of a play and taking the pretest for the next reading topic which will focus on interpretation of text.

Writing/Social Studies - Fourth graders are still working on their informational writing unit on westward expansion. The students have finished writing chapter 1 and putting their final copy onto StoryJumper where they are starting to look like real books as they are using pictures and captions as well as other text features to bring the information to life. Students started researching the beginning of chapter 2 for their books that focuses on their specific westward expansion topic. The 4th graders were able to read books on their topic and make note cards organizing the information they found. Next, students will be drafting their writing for chapter 2 and entering it into StoryJumper.

Math - We are wrapping up our unit on Topic 12 this week and will take the test. Students will be tested on their ability to decompose fractions into sub fractions with the same denominator, adding and subtracting mixed numbers with like denominators, and solving word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators. Students will be taking the pretest for Topic 13 next week.

Science - Students are working hard on their science fair projects. This week the students have picked their science fair topics and have started to work on the steps in the scientific method. Students are identifying testable questions and forming a hypothesis for their project and will start to gather materials and work on the procedures they need to follow. Students will bring home a materials list today.  Please have all materials to school by March 11th!  There are only a few short weeks until these projects will be completed.  Projects will be set up on April 5th.  Science fair open house is on April 6th and 7th.

Curriculum Update Feb. 8 - 18

Student-Led Conferences - It was so wonderful to see many families at English Landing last week for student-led conferences.  It is fabulous to hear 4th graders explaining what we are learning to their parents and showing off their skills.  I hope you enjoyed it as much as we do!  If you are still needing to having a student-led conference with your child, please contact your child's teacher.  We strive for 100% attendance!  Thank you!

Friendship Party - Thank you so much to all the parents who donated their time to planning, organizing, and running our party. Also, thank you to those who helped the day of the party and to the parents who donated supplies.  The kids enjoyed a STEM Challenge using paper hearts to build the highest tower.  Then, they decorated sugar cookies, made a butterfly craft, and did relay races.  It was definitely a fun party!

Reading - We are continuing our unit on poetry.  Students have become experts at interpreting a poem and identifying/explaining alliteration, personification, similes, metaphors, hyperbole, and idioms.  This week, students will notice how authors use synonyms and antonyms in their poems to emphasize that an idea is true or to introduce contradictory information.  (The sun had a nasty day)  Usually we don't think of the sun as nasty.  We typically reserve this word to describe rain and other undesirable weather!  Students will dive into fables as well.  Students will study the lessons from fables such as "Slow and steady wins the race." from The Tortoise and the Hare.

Writing - Fourth graders are continuing with the informational writing unit on Westward Expansion.  Students will finish up chapter 1 of their book with the help of their teacher.  This is the chapter teachers are using as a model for what students will do more independently for chapter 2.  Students will be using a website called Storyjumper.com to make their book into a real book!  This site allows kids to add photos, captions, and other text features to their writing.  It can also be emailed, purchased,  or printed when finished.  Then, students will begin researching for chapter 2 and organizing their notes on their individual Westward Expansion topics soon!

Social Studies - Last week, we started learning about slavery and the Civil War in Missouri. Students were very surprised to learn that Missouri had over 10,000 slaves in 1820.  They were also very intrigued by the Underground Railroad and how this helped slaves escape.  We'll continue studying this time period throughout the week.

Math - We are wrapping up our unit on Topic 11 this week and will take the test.  Students will be tested on their ability to find factors and multiples for a number up to 100.  They will also need to find equivalent fractions, ordering up to 3 fractions by finding common denominators, and compare two fractions.  We'll also take the pretest for Topic 12; Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Mixed Numbers and Like Denominators.

Curriculum Updates

Reading - We began a new unit this week: Unit 5:  The Study of Short Test:  Diving into Language.  Students are immersed in poetry this week.  In future weeks we'll dive into Greek Mythology and fables.  In this unit students will learn to understand that singular pieces of poetry, prose and drama as well as collections of these pieces of writing tell a story and teach lessons through specific structures and language.  This study of poetry will focus on the way that poets use language to convey a meaning.  Students will spend time reading, listening to, and speaking poetry, prose and drama to develop a strong understanding of these different types of writing and the messages that are hidden inside.

Writing/Social Studies  Fourth graders also began a new unit this week in writing:  Unit 4:  Bringing History to Life.  This unit connects with out current learning in social studies.  Over the last few weeks, students have learned about the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark, trails West (Oregon, California, Santa Fe, and Mormon Trails), and the Pony Express.  In this unit, students will start with the general topic, "All about Westward Expansion" for their first chapter.  We will work as a class to research this chapter so students will have a model for their 2nd chapter.  Students have chosen a more focused topic during Westward Expansion to research for their 2nd chapter.  For this chapter, students will use books to help them research.  Students will collaborate with other kids who have the same topic as them.  Then students will organize their research notes in order to write their rough draft.

Science - We finished up our science unit on weathering, erosion, deposition and the human impact on our Earth this week by taking our test.  Look for tests to come home soon!

Math - In our new math unit, Topic 11:  Fraction Equivalence and Ordering, students began by reviewing factors and multiples.  In fourth grade, students need to be able to find all factor pairs for a whole number in the range of 1-100.  Students also need to determine whether a whole number in the range of 1-100 is a multiple of a given one-digit number.  Once students found all the factors for a number they identified the numbers as either prime or composite numbers.  We ended the week by learning about equivalent fractions and identifying fractions which are equivalent.

Red Friday

Dear English Landing Chiefs Fans,

            English Landing will participate in RED FRIDAY in honor of our Kansas City Chiefs playing in their first divisional playoff game since 1994. Students and staff are encouraged to show off their Chiefs’ pride by wearing a Kansas City Chiefs shirt or red on Friday, January 15th!   The Chiefs will play against the New England Patriots on Saturday, January 16th at 3:35pm on CBS. The Chiefs could play in the American Football Conference Championship if they win, and then maybe the Super Bowl! Thanks for supporting our community on this day.

The Park Hill District spelling bee will be held Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Park Hill South High School with the winner advancing directly to the Scripps National Spelling Bee held near Washington, DC., May 22-27, 2016.

Awards will be presented to the top ten finishers. All current Park Hill 5th-8th grade students are eligible, but students must register by January 8, 2016. Register thru the link below, or by going to the “Parent Resources” section of the Park Hill School District website.

Curriculum Updates

Reading - We are currently working on Unit 4 in reading.  Students are working in historical fiction book club groups. As a class we are reading Number the Stars by Lois Lowry.  At the end of December, fourth graders were working on writing good summaries.  Our current SMART goal is for all students to be able to write a good summary of their book club reading using the 'somebody, wanted, but, so, then' model.  This coming week we will discuss symbolism and themes in our reading.

Writing- Students are creating a newspaper about their book club book.  So far students have written the weather section which describes the mood of the book, the horoscope section which predicts the main character's future, and a person of the week section which describes the main character's traits.  Next week we'll continue to work on an advertisement to match the symbolism in the book.  Students will also write a main event section which will describe an important event in the book.

Math - We have been working on learning multiple strategies for multiplying 2-digit x 2-digit problems.  So far kids have learned how to use a matrix (also called the box method), an expanded algorithm, and the standard algorithm.  Our goal is to teach kids multiple strategies so they not only understand the process they are following, but they can choose a method that works best for them. Our next unit will be Topic 9 - Number Sense:  Dividing by 1-Digit Divisors.

Science- We started our electricity unit before break and will continue the first 2 weeks in January. Students will have an opportunity to make circuits, test conductors and insulators, and make series and parallel circuits.   Students will learn the difference between open and closed circuits, conductors & insulators, and series & parallel circuits.   This is usually a favorite 4th grade unit!

Reporting Topics:
The student will:

  • construct and diagram a complete electric circuit by using a source (e.g., battery), means of transfer (e.g., wires), receiver (e.g., fans, resistance bulbs, motors, fans) and observe the evidence of energy transfer in a closed series circuit (e.g., lit bulb, moving motor, fan). 
  • classify materials as conductors or insulators of electricity when placed within a circuit (e.g., wood, pencil lead, plastic, glass, aluminum foil, lemon juice, air, water).
